How to change the world: Step One

To many Christians, the world seems to be breaking off it’s axis.  Culture is shifting in ways and at a pace that no one has ever seen before.  Every time that another social tremor rumbles across our world, confusion, fear and frustration come pouring out.

My concern is always “what should my response be”  or “what would God have me do?”

The temptation is to be passive.

I am not naturally confrontational.  I don’t like ugly debates.

I would love to have reasonable conversations with people about all sorts of things yet few seem willing to engage in real discussion.  It is easier for people to fire off a Facebook post or a tweet that is filled with accusation and spurious wisdom.

However,  passivity is a dangerous course of inaction.

In the beginning, Adam’s inaction allowed the snake to have his way with Eve and the world has been suffering the consequences ever since.

So, what do we do?

I think there are a lot of important things that we can do to change the world.

Love well.

Serve well.

Speak the truth.

Defend the faith.

Share the gospel.

These are all vital courses of action that have been turning the world upside down since the resurrection of Jesus Christ.  Just as we see the world shifting today, let’s remember that the world has shifted many times in the past because men and women were willing to faithfully do these simple things in spite of the cultures opposition.

Yet there is a first step that is even more important.  Okay…pray first.  That is most important.  This is really the second step toward changing the world.

Before you worry about the world’s disobedience, give attention to your own.

We don’t have to be perfect to be able to proclaim what is true.

However, if we do not care enough to value God’s standards with our own obedience, it is foolish to think that our words will carry any appeal or power.

For example, if you think the current marriage battle is significant…

will you reject divorce as an option?

will you be faithful to your spouse always?

will you love, cherish and nurture your wife?

will you respect your husband?

will you reject a passionless marriage and fight for intimacy?

I heard someone say a few years ago that as Christians, we have lost our authority on marriage because of our own disobedience to God in our marriages.

Well…God’s truth is authoritative whether we obey it or not.  But, we have surrendered much influence in the world due to our disobedience.  Sometimes, our city on the hill looks like a couple guys with flashlights.

If we want to show people the way, we need to burn bright.

If we believe that our way is God’s way, we need to be faithful to it.

If God’s way is the best way, we need to demonstrate it with exceptional and attractive lives.

Change the world?

Change you.

And don’t forget the real first step, pray.  You will need God’s help every step of the way.

“Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul. Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.”  -1 Peter 2:11-12
