Be. Be somebody. Be somebody… today.
I think big ambitions are good. I appreciate a great vision for a church, a business, a life. Set enormous goals and pursue them. Absolutely. But…don’t get lost in them…don’t wait for that glorious day of success to live or count yourself significant. I’ve done that. It’s frustrating.
The great American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow said “Most people would succeed in small things if they were not troubled with great ambitions.”
I’m not against ambition. Ambition is good, but we cannot let it overshadow the importance of the small things that we can do everyday. We may want to be this or that in the future, but what about what we could be today?
I want you to consider the fact that you could be somebody really important today. All that you have to do is make a choice…a small choice to be somebody today that does some small thing that is a big blessing to someone else.
Be an encourager.
Be a friend.
Be a listener.
Be a truth teller.
Be a peacemaker.
Be an exhorter.
Be a giver.
Be a counselor.
Be a servant.
Be a leader.
Be a helper.
Be a lover.
Be a forgiver.
It doesn’t take much education, training or expertise to do those things. You could be one of those people today. You could just decide to find someway to encourage someone today. It doesn’t have to be complicated or extravagant. Remember the last time someone shared a few kind words with you and how that lifted your soul? Share some words like that with someone.
Maybe you just look for an opportunity at home or at work to perform some small deed that is outside your list of responsibilities. You do it just to help…just to serve…just to love. Maybe they won’t even notice or say thank you. So what? Be that person anyway.
Keep your eyes open for the needs of those around you. Step into those needs. Sometimes it may demand a lot of you. Most of the time, it just demands something small like a listening ear or a prayer. Yet, we often rush by those opportunities and miss the chance to be somebody really important to someone else.
There is a quote that I’ve seen attributed to about every important figure of the last several hundred years. I don’t know who really said it, but it rings so true. “Be kind because everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.”
Today, you could be someone really significant to someone in their battle.
Be that somebody today. According to Jesus, our life is defined by what we do for others.
“…whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Who are you going to be today?
