These days will never come again…carpe diem and all that stuff

carpe diem

Carpe Diem!  Seize the day.  It’s all a little cliche and worn out.  YOLO if you like.  But what the heck…carpe diem because these days will never come again.  What days?  Whatever days you are living.  Is your son or daughter two or six or thirteen?  Those days will never come again.  Carpe Diem!  Are you on the front end of a new marriage or on the verge of an empty nest?  Carpe Diem! Those days will never come again.  Is it summer vacation?  Do you start college next fall?  Is a new job or business or ministry on the horizon?  Carpe Diem!  Those days are not coming back.

I am a bit nostolgic and sad and happy today as I prepare a speech for my son’s impending graduation.  I first opened up the speech I gave at my daughter’s graduation last year and got a little weepy.  Then I started to write my son’s speech and got a little more weepy.  These days will never come again.  They are done.  I read this from Dr. Seuss at my daughters graduation last year.

“How did it get so late so soon?
It’s night before it’s afternoon.
December is here before it’s June.
My goodness how the time has flewn.
How did it get so late so soon.”

-Dr. Seuss

That’s it isn’t it?  The time flies and then it’s flewn.  It’s gone and you cannot figure out where it flew to.  Even though it still gets me a little teary eyed, I am happy with how we have spent our time as a family.  A few years ago, it really hit me that this day was coming.  My kids would be grown.  I wrote down in my journal the phrase “These days will never come again.”  It was my way of saying “Carpe Diem!”  Make the most of the time.  We have tried to do that and I encourage you to do it too.  This is critical across the board in every area of life.

Ephesians 5:16 says “Make the most of every opportunity for the days are evil.”  Some translations say “redeem the time.”  I love that phrase.  Time is short.  You have one life to decide to follow Jesus or not.  You have one life to make your existence on this planet matter or not.  You have one chance to love people well or not.

What are you doing with your days?  What will you do with them?  Carpe Diem and all that stuff.

“You must live in the present, launch yourself on every wave, find your eternity in each moment. Fools stand on their island of opportunities and look toward another land. There is no other land; there is no other life but this.”
-Henry David Thoreau
